AMRC Data Archive

The Antarctic Meteorological Research Center archives data in a variety of formats and makes this data freely available to the scientific community and to the public. Users are asked to acknowledge AMRC in anything produced or published using or referencing the data. To request data from the AMRC, please contact us. Specify the type of data and a range of dates, along with your name and organization as appropriate.

Antarctic Composite Images

AMRC's hallmark has been the Antarctic composite satellite image. It is a mosaic of geostationary and polar orbiting satellite data in the infrared window channel (approximately 11.0 microns) centered over the South Pole and covering much of the Southern Hemisphere. The AMRC has built these composites every three hours (0, 3, 6, etc Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) or Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)) since 30 October 1992. The composite is generated at the AMRC offices at the University of Wisconsin and is distributed to McMurdo Station, Antarctica. To see a sample image, choose one from these lists:

We keep the past few weeks' worth of color enhanced, low resolution composite images online for perusal. File names are constructed as follows: dddAhhhh.gif where "ddd" is the Julian day, "A" indicates our low resolution color enhanced composite, and "hhhh" is the UTC time in hours and minutes. Thus the file 365A1200.gif would be from December 31st, at 1200 UTC in a non-leap year.

We also keep the past few weeks' worth of full resolution composites online. File names are constructed as follows: dddChhhh.gif where "ddd" is the Julian day, "C" indicates our full resolution composite, and "hhhh" is the UTC time in hours and minutes. Thus the file 363C0900.gif would be from December 29th, at 0900 UTC in a non-leap year.

We also keep the past few weeks' worth of psuedo color composites online. File names are constructed as fol lows: amrc_color_composite-YYDDD-HH where "YYDDD" is the Year and Julian day, " HH" is the UTC time in hours.
